AUSTEN BRANTLEY

My work is a reflection of the rich tapestry of cultural influences that have shaped my identity. Through my figurative sculptures, I seek to explore the intersections of Greek and African culture within a contemporary context, weaving together elements of ancient history, modern-day struggles, and the enduring resilience of the human spirit.

Drawing inspiration from the timeless artistry of both Greek and African traditions, my sculpture serves as a visual dialogue between these two distinct yet interconnected worlds. The classical aesthetics of Greek sculpture and the profound symbolism of African art converge to form a dynamic representation of cultural fusion and hybridity. Through the juxtaposition of these diverse elements, I aim to challenge preconceived notions of cultural boundaries and celebrate the universality of human experience.

Embedded within the contours of the are narratives of struggle, perseverance, and triumph, reflecting the daily realities faced by individuals within marginalized communities. The juxtaposition of ancient cultural motifs with contemporary styling serves as a poignant commentary on the enduring impact of history on the present, as well as a testament to the enduring legacy of cultural heritage.

Through my sculpture, I invite viewers to contemplate the complexities of cultural identity, the enduring legacy of historical narratives, and the resilience of communities facing socio-economic challenges. By bridging the past and the present, I strive to foster a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of human experience and the enduring power of art to transcend barriers and unite disparate worlds.
