Brian Day is a Kresge 2021 Visual Arts Fellow

CONGRATULATIONS BRIAN DAY!


Congratulations to Brian Day who has been named a 2021 Kresge Arts in Detroit Visual Artist Fellow.

The selection criteria for Kresge Artist Fellowships include a demonstrated track record of artistic achievement and high-quality work, the potential to grow and advance in one’s artistic career, and the potential to reflect, enhance, or impact communities within metropolitan Detroit.

 An online celebration of the 2021 award recipients is scheduled for the evening of July 15. The public, virtual event will include remarks from the 30 award recipients, performances by Kresge Artist Fellows Cherise Morris (2019) and Passalacqua (2012), as well as reflections on Detroit’s arts and culture sector from Carole Harris (2019 fellowship panelist and 2015 Kresge Artist Fellow), Rip Rapson (president and CEO, The Kresge Foundation), and Don Tuski (president, College for Creative Studies) in a conversation moderated by W. Kim Heron (senior communications officer, The Kresge Foundation).

ABOUT BRIAN DAY

Brian Day (b. 1977) is a third generation Detroit native. He discovered photography through the suggestion of a colleague and began exploring documentary and fine art projects around the city using film and digital cameras. Day cites as early influences the work of Ansel Adams, Gordon Parks, Michael Kenna, Alexander Rodchenko, and Joel Meyerowitz, to name a few.

His work has been exhibited both locally and internationally, and published in Scientific American, Hour Detroit, Esquire, Smithsonian, CNN, The Detroit Free Press, The Detroit News, and Metro Times, among others. He was awarded a Documenting Detroit Fellowship in 2016, and was a recipient of the Michigan Chronicle’s Men of Excellence award in 2017, which recognizes creative and influential personalities making a positive impact on the city of Detroit. His recent series Detroit From Above has been much acclaimed and won First Place in Architecture at the International Photography Awards in 2018. In 2020, Day was commissioned by Apple to photograph a feature entitled, Hometown: Detroit. In early 2021, Day’s work was added to the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts. Day also contributes to the community through his work as Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit.

Administered by the College for Creative Studies, Kresge Arts in Detroit represents one aspect of The Kresge Foundation’s investment in the artistic communities of metropolitan Detroit, providing support to artists living and working in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. The Kresge Foundation’s Detroit Program is a comprehensive community development effort to strengthen the long-term economic, social, and cultural fabric of the city and surrounding region.

Since 2008, Kresge Arts in Detroit has awarded more than $6.2 million through 13 Kresge Eminent Artist Awards ($50,000 each), 218 Kresge Artist fellowships ($25,000 each), and 22 Gilda Awards ($5,000 each).
