In first exhibition of his drawings in five years, Rucker explores the connections between rock pigeons and African-American males — “marginalized person, marginalized animal,” says Rucker.

The Vanguard Artist Collective is a semi-formal nod to pioneering Chicago-based black art collectives like the Organization of Black American Culture and AfriCOBRA, which were founded during the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

“We push each other to be better artists and better people — even when it’s critical,” says Rucker.

M Contemporary Art was a part of Detroit Art Week from July 16 - July 21, 2019 with a lineup of events including the opening of Brian Day’s “A Moment Away,” a collection visit at the Burris Law offices, and studio tours with Senghor Reid, Scott Vincent Campbell and Robert Mirek.

For his latest series of paintings, Detroit artist Senghor Reid started with small studies, building a system of gestural movements that began to simulate something that surrounds us here in the Great Lakes State but perhaps can easily become taken for granted — water.
