Black Girls in the Window

An autobiographical narrative inspired by the work of black female art makers, this work desires to see through the past, present, and prospective future of black femme artists and their stories. Created with handmade materials linked to domesticity and ritual, these textures merge to explore the tumultuous hurdles that women of color have faced being represented in the fine art world, both socially and privately. Some of these materials would have uniquely remained invisible unless burned or pressured with fire, this rekindling the memories of racial prejudice and the lack of acknowledging its existence. Through the panes of Black Girls Window, 1969 by Betye Saar, these derogatories are deconstructed to ultimately combat their misrepresentation and lack of inclusivity of black female voices in history.
